Introduction
Using the Banshee Streamrecorder is simple and straight-forward. After Installation there is a red record button and a “Streamrecorder” submenu in the tools section. These are the main components in using the extension.
First Steps
After installing the extension use the new “Streamrecorder” submenu to configure the encoder and output directory for recorded streams as well as the File Scanner. Then you are all set to record your first radio stream.
Menu
The “Streamrecorder” submenu is found in the “Tools” Menu and offers two menu items:
- “Activate Streamrecorder” — to activate recording of played streams
- “Configure” — to configure the encoder, output directory and File Scanner of the extension
Activate Streamrecorder
By Activating the Banshee Streamrecorder, the checkmark in front of the menu item will be checked (and the red record button be intented). In this state any internet radio stream/external stream will be recorded to the configured output directory until playing is stopped or the extension is deactivated by clicking the menu item one more time, removing the checkmark in front. Any local files will not be recorded and playing these will not result in any action of the Streamrecoder extension.
Configure
A configuration dialog is opened and allows to set the follwing:
- the output directory of the recorded streams
- the encoder to use
- if streams should be split by metadata
- Splitting by metadata is done, if the stream supports sending tags. If new tags are sent through the stream, Streamrecorder will start a new file with the corresponding name.
- Splitting by metadata is done, if the stream supports sending tags. If new tags are sent through the stream, Streamrecorder will start a new file with the corresponding name.
- if the recorded streams are to be traced and added to the music library
Available Encoders
Depending on the GStreamer Plugins installed on your system there are up to three encoders available:
- LAME MP3 encoder — will produce .mp3 files
- Ogg/Vorbis encoder — will produce .ogg files
- FLAC encoder — will produce .flac files
The Record Button
The record button in the toolbar is a shortcut to the “Activate Streamrecorder” menu item. It has the same functionality. It also indicates if the Streamrecorder is active or inactive by being indented or not. While a stream is playing and the Streamrecorder not yet active, the easiest way to record that stream is by simply clicking the record button. Another click will stop recording, as will changing playback to locally stored music tracks.
